Full course description
Welcome to Sustainable Pavements: P2! The pavement industry is currently focused on developing a more sustainable product. This requires contractors and agencies understanding what sustainability is and what choices can be made to improve the environmental, economic, and social impacts a pavement can have. This course focuses on three facets which can impact the sustainability of asphalt mixtures: ground tire rubber modification of asphalt binders, warm mix asphalt, and compaction of asphalt mixtures. Through reusing waste materials, reducing emissions and energy use at plants, and improving the overall performance of the asphalt mixture through compaction, the industry will be able to assess its impact on the sustainability triple-bottom line.
At the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- The participant will understand what being sustainable means and how it applies to pavements.
- The participant will understand how ground tire rubber is processed and used in conjunction with asphalt binder.
- The participant will gain insight into why warm mix asphalt has become a major component of the asphalt pavement industry’s sustainability message.
- The participant will learn why the compaction of an asphalt mixture is just as critical to its sustainability as material selection or production temperature.
