Full course description
This course addresses a central question that influences our personal and professional decisions: "What good thing must I do?" From a legal perspective, this question is framed as "Do no wrong," while ethicists suggest that "good" is relative to perspective. Despite differing views, we share a common societal perspective rooted in our founding principles. You will learn how legal and ethical perspectives form a layered system. At one level, this system addresses shared values central to answering "What good thing must I do?" At another level, it deals with the law, which manages those who disregard these values. The course explores the legal and ethical heritage shaping our society, evaluates current legal perspectives, and examines whether a straightforward approach leads to correct legal conclusions. This approach is illustrated through a "risk management" program for highways, roads, and bridges.
