Full course description

This course provides a comprehensive review of the development and design of the State Plane Coordinate System (SPCS), starting with its inception in 1927. You'll explore the units of length used, the Clarke 1866 Ellipsoid, the GRS 80 Ellipsoid, and NAD 83 Coordinates, as well as the updates made in the State Plane Coordinate System of 1983. The course covers the fundamentals of map projections, including conformality, Lambert Conformal Projection, Transverse Mercator Projection, and Oblique Mercator Projection. You'll learn about scale factors, elevation factors, combined factors, convergence of the meridian, grid azimuth "t," and projected geodetic azimuth "T." Additionally, the course includes practical applications such as converting from latitude and longitude to State Plane Coordinates and vice versa, understanding state zones, and using relevant software. You'll also delve into traversing in State Plane Coordinates with numerical examples, surface coordinates, and the Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) Projection, including its definition, scale factors, and zone dimensions and definitions.

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the historical development and design elements of the State Plane Coordinate System.
  2. Explain the significance of the Clarke 1866 Ellipsoid, the GRS 80 Ellipsoid, and NAD 83 Coordinates.
  3. Explain the fundamentals of map projections and their applications.
  4. Compare different types of map projections, including Lambert Conformal, Transverse Mercator, and Oblique Mercator Projections.
  5. Calculate scale factors, elevation factors, and combined factors.
  6. Interpret the convergence of the meridian, grid azimuth "t," and projected geodetic azimuth "T."
  7. Convert between latitude and longitude and State Plane Coordinates, and vice versa.
  8. Perform traversing in State Plane Coordinates with numerical examples.
